Kai Weisser is working on a book about the history of Huntington Beach lifeguards for Arcadia Publishing, and needs your help in tracking down additional photos and information.
Kai writes, "The Arcadia book Huntington Beach Lifeguards will include the City Beach, State Beach (HB & Bolsa), Junior Lifeguards, competition, surfing the pier, and a chapter titled Extra...
"As an author I completed a project with the HB International Surfing Museum called 'Heroes of Surf Lifesaving' in 1992 with the help of Don Strout, a Trustee of the HBISM. I lived in HB for nearly 40 years (schools Eader, Gisler and Edison), started as a HB city Lifeguard in 1979 and Marine Safety Officer in 1986. I have an M. A. from University of Phoenix."
So how about it folks? If you know of any historic or significant photos relating to that subject, please send an email to Kai at [email protected].
Kai also sent along these sample photos: (Click to enlarge)
"1929 HB lifeguard crew with Bud Higgins, far right, arms together. I need names for all but three in this the oldest crew photo!"
"1939 LG Chief Bud Higgins and Lt. Don Winters (Navy pilot lost in WWII) respond off the pier with victim driving LG motorcycle sidecar"
"1959 LG Chuck Manley on the pier "Tower Zero" before the windows and roof were built."
Good to have another HB/Arcadia book coming to the shelves. I'm doing a HB Then/Now edition currently for Arcadia for release next year so we should have good parts of the city covered with these titles.

Chris,
Thanks for the post and kind words. The HB Lifeguards book is a great challenge and finding photos of the past is equally challenging. Some of the best photos are still out there waiting to be taken out of the old storage trunks and brought back to life. And if they can find there way into the HB Lifeguards book, even better. Cheers!
